Mismatched Mugs - A Thrift Store Craft

I know I promised in my last local post to show you this on Thursday, but that didn't happen. So here it is -- a project (and gift!) that I made using one of my Rescued Treasures thrift store finds.

I made two sets, one for my mom and one for myself.

Altogether, BOTH sets cost me less than $9.

$5 - Porcelaine Marker (still usable for more projects)
$4 - Set of 16 White Mugs (8 for mom and 8 for me from Durham Rescue Mission thrift shop)

$4 for 16 mugs from the Durham Rescue Mission thrift shop.

Each mug was $.50 but the day I was there, housewares were 50% off plus an additional 10% off for having made a donation. Score!

Now I have to give credit to Design Mom for the project idea. Her tutorial post is where I learned how easy it is to make a set of monogrammed mugs. Her idea inspired me to make my mom's Christmas gift -- a numbered set of mismatched white mugs.

So, I searched out the mugs (Goodwill was a bust), my husband did the actual drawing, and then I baked them.

Here's the result --

The numbered mugs we made as a gift for my mom.

Of course, the ultimate test was whether they could withstand the dishwasher and I'm sad to say that in my set 2 of the 8 failed to pass the dishwasher round. With one, an oversized mug, I'm thinking it never got hot enough in the oven to seal correctly as part stayed put and part smeared away during washing. With the other more dainty one, I think it had something to do with the finish as the entire image just washed away.

One of the two that failed.

I guess I'll be making a return trip soon to find my replacements and maybe even a few plates and bowls to make one complete mismatched eclectic set.

A few from my set of numbered mugs.

When you've got a kid like this, you have to accept mismatched and learn to LOVE it.
