I'm Just the Nanny

Do you ever wish that sometimes you could play the nanny card? You know, when someone asks, "Is he *still* wearing diapers?" Wouldn't it be nice to reply, "Oh, I know but his parents just aren't ready yet."

It would be so easy to deflect criticism to "his parents". Of course, the fact that my kid is running around the playground shouting, "Mommy. Mommy. Hurry. Hurry," might just give it away.

Although I'm not yet ready to give up the option in the event of a grocery store meltdown.

Abby, there's nothing wrong with letting him stay in diapers awhile longer. I pushed Cole and Kelsey to potty train and it last almost a year with each child. They were both over the age of 3 before they wanted to do it. Ella has started simply because she was ready. Linus will let you know when he's good and ready. No need to rush it...so don't feel bad when asked those questions. Just ignore them.

If, in the sense of being the nanny, you mean I would get to leave the premises at 5 p.m. and be off-duty until 8 the next morning, then YES, I would often like to be the nanny.

Did someone actually say that to you about the diapers? Sheesh! The kid is barely over two! I agree with the grocery store scenario. I have often wanted to say, "Your parents are going to be very disappointed in your behavior when I tell them!"

I think he has to look a little less than exactly like you in order for that to work.

HAHAHA! Love it; I think I need to remember this excuse the next time AJ throws a meltdown. Our latest was at the library because all the books on Toy Story were checked out (he is a LITTLE obsessed with Buzz Lightyear right now). I could've used the nanny card there; we got so many NICE looks. Sigh.

My favorite thing in the world to do is to tell parents they're doing a great job when I see their shorties having meltdowns. One time I was out to lunch with my cohort from Washburn and we saw a kid laying on the floor in the restaurant while the parents ate at their booth and we sent a delegate to tell them they were doing great at ignoring the tantrum.

Now when Jonathan and I have the little guy, we do spend quite a bit of time telling people we're not his parents but the aunt and uncle - of course that's just because they're telling us how adorable he is and we can't take credit. :)

I've pulled the nanny card with telephone calls, "Oh I'm sorry - this is the babysitter. You'll have to call back some other time..."

For the issues I'd really like to deflect - the nanny card just won't work. "Yeah, he's still nursing. I'm not sure why his mom won't give it up..." See what I mean?

I so hear this! I wanted to claim I was the nanny all through our flight from BWI to BDL last week. Abigail was just overtired, sick, and hysterical from takeoff to landing (thank God it was not a long flight). All I could do was apologize to the lady next to us. It was bad.

*snort* I do it all the time. "Your mother will be so angry when she hears how you behaved at the grocery store today." The boys look up at me startled, the new check-out clerk looks at me sympathetically, I get a free pass--until she figures out a few weeks later that they are my spawn.
