Genius

I've made a lot of decisions as a parent. From the small though often paralyzing choice of what to dress Linus in, to the significantly larger question of vaccinations. However, there is one decision that stands out above all others as the best parenting decision I have ever made. That decision was to let my husband be in control of the bedtime routine.

Sure, it seemed like a nothing decision when first faced with it. The initial advantages being simple: a small break for myself after a long, exhausting day, a chance for Adrian and Linus to spend quality time together during the after work hours, and the freedom to escape the house to get dinner with girlfriends before bedtime. However, it was this evening that I came to learn the ultimate advantage in not being the go-to bedtime guy: When Linus awakens unexpectedly in the middle of the night (or evening as it was tonight), he requests... Daddy.

I think I definitely made the right call on that one.

In case you're curious, I'm currently writing this post from our Wii. My computer is completely fried. So while my incredibly genius brother-in-law (yes, I'm not above sucking up) attempts to salvage the data from my hard drive, I am without a computer. Once the full extent of the damage is determined, we'll know whether or not I will be needing a new laptop. Until then, my blogging, Tweeting, emailing, and Facebooking may be infrequent. I am here, just significantly impaired technology-wise.

Sorry to hear about the demise of the laptop. Let us know if you want to borrow ours until you get up and running again!

I think it's huge to let the dads claim their turf--it helps them bond and see that mom's not the only parent! D & I share bedtime duty, but some areas are exclusively D's anymore and it's so nice.

Brilliant. We do the same thing (for mostly the same reasons), although J still calls for me sometimes in the middle of the night. But it also turned out to be a great idea when we had baby #2 -- that way J's routine stayed the same at bedtime, even though I was tending to the newborn. Now we go man-to-man defense for bedtime (or parent-to-child, I guess) and it switches around sometimes, but more often than not it's still Daddy and J time.
