Communication Breakdown with a Toddler

Quote: Have you ever just looked at our child and wondered if he's "special"? I mean, are all toddlers that messed up?

This is what my husband said to me as we sat down to share a snack. It is a question inspired by a recent disciplining conversation he had with Linus. It went like this.

Daddy: Linus, you do not hit your mother. Linus, should you hit your mother?

Linus: Uh-huh.

Daddy (trying again knowing there is a communication breakdown): Linus, what are you in trouble for?

Linus: E-I-E-I-O

Daddy (trying again): Linus you hit your mother. No hitting. Linus, no...

Linus: woof woof hooooowwwl

Daddy (trying very hard not to laugh): Linus, no hitting.

I know research suggests that toddlers brains are functioning nearly twice as fast as an adults, but one has to wonder on what planet his brain is functioning and what language we have to use to get through to this alien life form.

Thank you so much for the giggle today! Good for Adrian trying to correct the behavior, keep trying.

And this almost exact conversation is why we recently checked out "Hands are Not for Hitting" at the library.

Woof.

@anon I'm an idiot. It's very obvious that I write posts very late at night and on little time. Oops. Thanks for pointing it out. ;)

Ah, the old "pretend you're a dog and they can't talk at you" trick. My five year old STILL attempts that one!

About 31 years ago (eons to you I am sure)we had a young son who replied to a remark made by his father with "I don't hear you daddy." the remark was repeated...again the young son replied "I don't hear you daddy." At that point the young son got a good swat on his bottom. Again he replied "I don't hear you daddy!" That broke the bank until he finally replied, "I hear you daddy." I don't suggest this. The father has regretted it ever since. But it did seem to work.... go figure....
